DON’T MISS GIVEAWAYS: $25 Amazon Gift Card & ebooks of Rebecca’s Realm Enforcer series (bottom of post!)

DaVinciKittie (DVK): Rebecca, thank you so much for joining us today! You are one of the busiest authors I know, so when I scheduled the topic of Balancing Life & Work for Indie Month, I thought you’d be perfect. With such a crazy busy schedule, I appreciate you making time to hang out for a while and share your experiences.

Rebecca Zanetti (RZ): Hi Sue! GraveTells is one of my absolute favorite sites, as you know. I’m always happy to be here. Thank you for all the fun events you have!

DVK: Girlfriend, I live for fun! *grin* Speaking of… I can think of three different series offhand that you’re currently writing in. To give everyone an idea of just how many writing commitments you’re juggling, would you give us a quick overview of what your timelines look like in 2017?

RZ: Um…sure. It looks a little daunting, but it’s doable. I have a deadline list and a release list, so I’ll give you both. I would like to say that this is a heavy release year and a normal deadline year. I don’t plan on releasing this many books in one year again. The schedule just ended up this way.

2017 Book Deadlines:

  • February 21 – Twisted Truths (Blood Brothers Book 3) due
  • March 21 – Tangled (1001 Dark Nights novella) due
  • June 26 – Storm Gathering (Scorpius Syndrome Book 4) due
  • August 1 – New paranormal (Book 1 of new paranormal series) due
  • October 2 – Hidden (Book 1 of new romantic suspense series) due
  • November 14 – Winter Igniting (Scorpius Syndrome Book 5) due
  • December 4 – 1001 Dark Nights novella due

2017 Book Releases (re-releases in blue, NEW in black):

  • January 31 – Justice Ascending (Scorpius Syndrome Book 3) release
  • March 14 – Realm Enforcer boxed set release
  • April 35 – Deadly Silence release in mass market (already in trade and eBook)
  • May 9 – Tangled (1001 DN novella) release
  • May 16 – Lethal Lies trade paperback, eBook audio (Blood Brothers Book 2) release
  • June 6 – Talen (novella) re-release
  • July 4 – Wicked Kiss (Realm Enforcers Book 4) release
  • August 1 – Wicked Bite (Realm Enforcers Book 5) release
  • September 19 – Storm Igniting (Scorpius Syndrome Book 4) release
  • October 31 – Lethal Lies mass market release
  • November 14 – Twisted Truth (Blood Brothers Book 3) release

DVK: I feel tired just looking at your schedule! About how many hours a week would you say you spend working, and what does a normal work week look like for you?

RZ: I don’t think there’s a normal work week, to be honest. If I’m under deadline, I’m writing more than anything else. Or I’m in copy edits or promotion land sometimes. I do work every day, but I enjoy what I do, so it’s definitely worth it. Right now, at this second, I’m under a tight deadline. So I like to write about 9000 words a day, and I do that by employing an hour on, an hour off, system. I write for an hour (until I hit 1500 words, and then I walk away from the computer), and then I do something else for an hour like work out, eat, laundry, or watch Supernatural. Then at the hour, I’m back to the computer. A 60-hour work week is pretty normal for me.

DVK: Do you have any daily rituals or life hacks you depend on to help you stay in the groove and on deadline?

RZ: The hour on and off works well for me. I also have a music playlist for every book that helps me get instantly back into that book to write. Coffee and/or tea make a morning nice, and I like to wear thick and comfy socks when I’m writing.

I like to wear thick and comfy socks when I’m writing.

DVK: Aside from keeping up with writing deadlines, you also attend conferences and special reader events, like the upcoming 1001 Dark Nights Cruise in January. Do you schedule time during these events to write or do you treat them more as social engagements?

RZ: It depends on what deadlines I have. It takes me forever (2-3 plane rides) to get anywhere from where I live, so I do schedule writing time on travel days. I write a lot in airport lounges and on planes. Then I may schedule time during the conference, but not during RT. I’ve never had time to write at RT [Romantic Times Convention].

DVK: I don’t know how people have time to sleep at RT! I imagine keeping up with personal commitments might be challenging when you’re managing so much for work. Have you had to make any sacrifices? And if so, was it worth it?

RZ: I have a hubby and two kids, so I make sure to be there for them. They’re all athletic, and I attend a lot of games. But I have made sacrifices in the name of fun. Camping, days at the lake, parties…I have skipped many to write. And yeah, it was worth it. I think to succeed in any business, you have to make it a priority. In the immortal words of Fight Club: “Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.” LOL!

DVK: Whew, hardcore! But so true. What advice do you have for aspiring authors worried about balancing their work and home lives?

RZ: This is such a fun and hard question all at once! I’d say that we all need to establish our priority list. Is laundry really above writing for the day? It might be if you have a new baby and are using cloth diapers. It might not be if your kids are older and have tons of clothes. Or if they’re old enough to do their own laundry. What’s your list? Family is at the top of mine, above writing. Friends in need are above writing. Friends out partying are not. (Don’t get me wrong. I will happily go out and party if I’m not under deadline). Writing needs to be toward the top of your list and be part of your balance if you want to succeed.

Writing needs to be toward the top of your list and be part of your balance if you want to succeed.

DVK: When you have time to read for yourself, what are a few of the authors and genres you gravitate to?

RZ: I read all genres and love to read. Some of my favorite authors are: Lexi Blake, Kristen Ashley, Cherise Sinclair, Cynthia Eden, Lara Adrian, Dean Koontz, Larissa Ione, Shayla Black, Alexandra Ivy, Kat Martin, Katee Robert…and I could just keep going forever.

DVK: That is a stellar roll call of authors! Here’s hoping you get some time in 2017 to take a few stress-free breaths and enjoy a nice, long, quiet read. Rebecca, thank you SO MUCH for sharing your insight and visiting with us today. *hugs*

Working as an informant for the DEA, Victoria Monzelle is used to living on the edge. But she’s not a big fan of getting kidnapped. And definitely not by a bunch of bad boy witches with fancy-colored fire to shoot at people. So when Adam Dunne shows up and claims to be a witch enforcer, she’s not going to put her life in his hands based on his word, no matter how smooth and smart and beautifully Irish his words sound. But on the run from a tribunal of witches, she isn’t going to make it far . . .

Before she knows it, Adam’s word is all that stands between her and execution. Sophisticated, just-gotta-ruffle-him Adam has vowed to make her his one eternal mate, wild and unpredictable as she is—to save her from a sentence of certain death. But Tori isn’t interested in being anyone’s pity date. And if they think she’s unpredictable now, they should see what’s coming next . . .
